Choosing a fire alarm system depends on the type of building, the purpose and use of the building and current legislation. The enforcement body is the local building control for Buildings. The Department of Communities and Local Government have published a number of guidance documents for premises. It is important because none of standard and legislation give any detailed information about type of system required however the guidance generally indicates appropriate British standards. The main standard for fire alarm systems is BS5839.
